Some tiny bees or wasps circled busily inside a bright orange California poppy yesterday afternoon in Redwood Park.

While bike riding, we also found a velvet ant — a colorful, fuzzy, wingless wasp with such a painful sting its nickname is “cow killer”!

The safest way to observe a member of the Dasymutilla genus!
The velvet ant’s bright color is a warning against its painful sting!
