Kieran’s school was shut for a week, so we took a train trip from California to Colorado and back. We slept on the train in bunks, ate meals in the dining car with many fascinating people — a television program director from Vancouver, a retired Air Force officer, and an open-pit gold miner from Nevada — and enjoyed the views out the dome car as we rolled through the Rockies and the Sierras.
